If there's an Arabica sub specie with a history of its own, this is the Bourbon variety, one of the oldest and most legendary in the world. Bourbon is considered the botanical variety of the Linné Arabica coffee specie, which had its roots in Ethiopia and was then cultivated in Yemen.
The story tells that in the 17th century, the Sultan of Yemen presented King Louis XIV of France with a gift of coffee plants that had been grown on the island of Réunion, previously known as Bourbon. .
Hence its name.
It was in 1864 when some of these plants were taken from the island of Réunion to the French colonies in America. Once in Brazil, they were given the name of Bourbon Vermelho and since 1945 they started to be cultivated in Pederneiras, Sao Paulo.
Today, Bourbon remains a scarce sub specie, reason why it's become a highly sought coffee.
